READ THIS prior to booking.
I’ve read other reviews that this is a franchise location with a recent change in ownership. I believe that any positive reviews were all written under previous ownership. I suspect these “sudden issues” that I’m going to detail were actually planned cost saving measures by management.
We arrived over Memorial Day weekend. My husband is out of town and I wanted to do something nice for my children so I booked a local hotel 5 miles away from our home for a fun night away. I specifically booked Embassy suites due to the pool, large breakfast they have in the morning, the evening reception, and the reviews their restaurant got online.
The day before our arrival, I received an email saying I could digitally check in and choose my room. I took the time to research the different rooms and chose one on the opposite side of the freeway on the highest floor in the category that I had booked. After doing so, it said that I would be able to get into my room as soon as it was ready, even if it was ready before the 4 PM check in time. The next day, we waited but it still said “preparing tour room” even after check in time, so we finally just drove to the hotel. We arrived at 4:20. There were fairly long lines and two people working the front desk. I could overhear frustrated customers, asking for discounts and refunds as I stood in line. Once it was my turn, the kind girl at the check-in desk let me know that “per management”, the entire hotel was without air-conditioning. Keep in mind that it was the hottest day of the year so far in the Seattle area. She went on to say that the evening reception was canceled, and the hotel restaurant and bars were all closed. I asked again why the restaurant was closed and whether it was a staffing issue, and she just continued to say “per management”. I asked if anyone for management was available to talk, and she said, “No, they told us that and left.”
Keep in mind that this is not a walkable hotel, so any of these people who were without a car now had nowhere convenient to eat dinner and would be forced to light rail or taxi. And if they were planning on having drinks at the bar, while their kids swim in the pool, they weren’t going to be able to do that now either. The roads surrounding this hotel are very busy and not the type that you want to walk on with small kids. People purposely seek out embassy suites because they have some of these amenities that most hotels don’t offer. Taking them away, particularly without notifying guests until they are already checking in, and then not having management present to do damage control, feels especially predatory and disrespectful. Only one guest was offered 10% off their room if they chose to stay.
The front desk did offer me the opportunity to cancel despite me booking a nonrefundable rate so I decided to check out the room first before making my decision. Instead of getting my chosen room, 504, I was given 327. The first thing I noticed on my way to our room was how dirty the hallways were and there was no housekeeper in sight. Soda cans, baby carrots, crackers and wrappers were strewn along the hallway. Once in our room, on initial inspection, it looked fairly clean, but then we noticed candy wrappers at the foot of the bed and evidence to show that cleaning was rushed. After standing in the bedroom for less than two minutes, my daughter and I both were so hot that we were red, and it became evident that we would not be able to sleep in this room without AC. We made our way back down to the front desk and asked for the refund after all. The front desk confirmed that I could cancel and incur no charges whatsoever.
I did notice that I got my mandatory hundred dollar incidental charge returned, but so far, I have not received a refund for my room. I was told this could take a couple of days. However, I received an email yesterday saying that since I booked a non-refundable rate, charges may apply. If I do not receive my entire payment back, I will be extremely angry.
This was clearly not an unexpected event and multiple staff members indicated as such. This was a cost saving measure that they chose to not to tell their patrons about until they were already at check-in and stranded. Management dumped it on the front desk staff to do the dirty work and left. Thank goodness, I live 5 miles away and I had a home to go to, but I feel terrible for the out-of-town visitors who were stuck with no options but to stay and deal with it. I can definitely understand their frustration. Of note, this hotel is NOT in Seattle. By car, it is an hour to Seatac (the main Seattle airport) on a good day. It’s 20 minutes to Paine Field. While it is near the light rail, it is nowhere near what I would consider to be a walkable hotel. There’s no way anyone would find anything comparable in the area on Memorial Day weekend. We planned to have a mini “staycation”, have dinner at the hotel, and enjoy a night away, but we were too turned off by the situation to stay, since 3/4 of the amenities were unavailable. On our way out, it was 73° outside, but walking out of the hotel, it felt like we were walking into a refrigerator. That’s how warm it was in the hotel without the AC.
I caution anybody considering staying here to look at other options. At the very least, call ahead of time and confirm that the amenities you would like are in fact available and that you were getting the room that you chose. But, I wouldn’t stay here at all given this history.
I will update this post if I don’t receive my promised refund.
