Good A.C.

We only stayed a night but it did the job. Excellent air conditioning; clean and comfortable; lots of traffic noise, though. The staff all seemed quite fun and whacky. The location isn't that inspiring but it's pretty handy for bus and train services.

Good for a quick stay

We stayed here for one night and had an early train out in the morning - the station is just 5 mins walk down the main road. Big room with good a/c. You enter through the restaurant which was popular with locals - the food was good and the staff friendly and attentive. Being on a main road there was quite a lot of traffic noise. A good place to stay if you're just passing through.

Good basic travellers choice

We came to Madurai to see the famous temple so this hotel was well situated near the bus and train stations and not far from the temple. The entrance was off putting at first, as it was through the busy restaurant and up some stained, but well swept stairs. The rooms are off an open balcony which overlooks the busy main road, but we expected that in this busy city, and liked the view of the mad traffic. Once inside the room it was a sanctuary. The room was very large, with useful furniture (most budget hotels have little or no furniture) The bed was clean and very comfortable. The water was hot in the shower room, the shower was excellent, great water pressure, and we did not experience the cooking smells which another reviewer complains of. The manager was easy to contact via the restaurant downstairs. He was very hands on, and unusually for an Indian hotel, he was regularly supervising repairs in the rooms. He wasn't hugely chatty but we found him helpful and reliable. A huge Indian breakfast was included in the price in the restaurant downstairs. This had an air con room and we ate there in the evenings too as the food was good and the service very good, we had good conversations with one of the waiters there, whose English was good. All in all we were glad to find this comfortable room in such a busy city. The restaurant is popular locally so it was easy to pick up a rickshaw or taxi outside.The only problem we had was finding it as our taxi driver was from another town. There is another Ashok Bhavan restaurant in Madurai, the other side of town, so it is important to say that it is near and on the same side of the main road as the Periyar Bus Stand.

Big spacious room and good vegetarian food

The room was very big and spacious with complimentary toiletries, the bathroom was clean and big and the staff was very helpful. Location is good for visiting the temple and for the local market. The air-conditioning works well - very much needed for the Madurai weather.
The food at the downstairs restaurant was very tasty and the complimentary breakfast was more than enough (they keep bringing one dish after the other). They could work to make the restaurant a bit more appealing aesthetically and have the entry to the rooms from outside the restaurant.
The only downside was the noise from the road as the hotel is on the main road and very close to a bus stand. But if you are not a light sleeper, this shouldn't be a problem.

Bad experience

After arriving at the hotel after a long train, we were shown to our room and asked to wait 10 minutes for the hotel manager to check us in and give us the wifi password. 2 hours later I had to go and remind them that we had been left waiting. When the manager arrived the first thing he asked for was the money for the room, which I luckily didn't have so said I'd pay later.
Unfortunately, all 5 of the hotel rooms are located directly above a restaurant, facing out towards a very noisy and busy road. The road was loud at all hours of the day and throughout the night, with cars and lorries blaring their horns constantly, making it difficult to sleep and remain asleep in the early hours of the morning.
The bathroom window was made out of wire mesh, and was located directly above the restaurant's kitchen, meaning the bathroom and shower filled up the smoke and smell of barbeque, and that smell drifted through the gaps in the bathroom door and into the room. It was basically like having a barbeque / fire pit in our room. This is exactly the same set up for all of their 5 rooms.
The wifi didn't reach our room either, meaning we had to leave our room and walk to the reception area to use the internet, where there was nowhere to sit. Additionally, the toilet didn't flush and the shower did not have hot water.
When we spoke to the manager about our issues straight after being shown the room, he asked for us to wait one hour and he would clean another room for us.
At 7:30pm we had to search for the manager to see if he had cleaned a room - it turned out he'd gone to bed. He lied to us and said that all the guests had extended for the night so all the rooms were busy. He denied being able to smell the burning and was adamant all the rooms were filled, but after threatening not to pay and leave, it turned out he actually had a room free for us. The bathroom still smelt of burning, but the room was more bearable. The wifi still did not work though, despite it being closer to reception.
After backpacking for 7 months, this was by far the worst hotel experience we have had. The managers behaviour was completely unacceptable and we ended up being shouted at and lied to. Not a good stay.
